How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Distance self-paced learning and face to face training and assessment

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed in 1 day training and assessment, and up to 2 hours pre-course learning

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 10

hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident

How is the course structured?

All learners will be assessed through:

  • Observation during role play/simulation
  • Questioning may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules or interview
  • Structured Activities may include Projects, Case studies, presentations, role play, demonstration, progressive tasks

What are the entry requirements?

There are no pre-requisites to enter this training program. However, Optimum Training Academy screens students according to the following criteria:

  • Are 18 years of age and over
  • Have sound Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills*
  • Have good general health and fitness for practicals (see ‘Physical attributes requirements’)
  • Have basic computer skills (for pre-course learning activities)

Numeracy and Literacy

Language, literacy and numeracy requirements are needed to undertake this course. Specifically, students need the ability to:

  • Prepare verbal incident reports or provide information to enable preparation of an incident report (e.g. a first aid report)
  • Communicate effectively and assertively in an incident (e.g. give a casualty handover)
  • Use literacy and numeracy skills as require reading, interpret and apply guideline and protocols (e.g. read and follow ARC guidelines)

*Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements of the course may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.

Physical attributes requirements

Each of the units of competency that this strategy applies to specifies that students must, among other things, be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, in order to be deemed as competent. They also must be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

Students must also be able to perform manual handling tasks safely.

Therefore, prospective students need to have the physical attributes to be able to:

  • Bring themselves to floor level in order to perform the above task.
  • Perform each of the above tasks uninterrupted for two minutes.
  • Have the physical capacity to perform manual handling tasks safely.

Licensing, Legislative, Regulatory or Certification Considerations

Specific licensing /regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training according to relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

ARC guidelines require first aid certification to be renewed every three (3) years.


What are the resources needed to complete the course?

To support you in your new course with Optimum Training Academy, we will provide the following:

    • Workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form

    • AED training device
    • Placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
    • Blankets and items to treat for shock
    • Roller bandages
    • Triangular bandages
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Workplace first aid kit
    • Wound dressings

For their pre-course learning, you will need ongoing access to the following:

  • Computer with:
    • internet access through Google Chrome or other internet browsers
    • MS Word, MS PowerPoint, or equivalent applications
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF viewers

Learners may choose to study other qualifications from relevant industries, such as:

  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support
  • HLT31020 Certificate III in Ambulance Communications (Call-taking)*
  • TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment*

*These courses are not offered by Optimum Training Academy


Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available?

Due to the high-risk nature of the course and certificate requirements, RPL is not offered for this unit of competency.
